A technique for examination of the rat gastric mucosa by the use of a flexible endoscope was described. The procedure does not require prior surgery and can be repeated over long time periods making it specifically useful for evaluation of chronic lesion. The insertion of a fine nylon cannula down through the endoscope permits the direct application of controlled doses of irritants onto a defined region of the gastric mucosa. The latter procedure allows for detection of early macroscopic changes with the facility for repeat observation in individual animals.
