Abstract

The high cost of health care is causing increasing concern to the public, government, and health care professionals. Coronary artery disease and particularly its surgical treatment is an enormous health care burden. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute, in conjunction with the Health Administration Program of the Faculty of Administration, has embarked on studies to determine the cost and cost-effectiveness of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The first step of this has been an investigation to determine the overall episode cost and cost variability for patients undergoing CABG. This is the first time an analysis of this type and detail has been undertaken in a Canadian institution.
