Current Concepts of Infections in Orthopedic Surgery

Abstract

The bacterial causes of deep wound infection after total joint replacement are well known. Review of 17,170 infected total hip replacements (THR) procedures (Franco and Ennekin, 1979) implicated Staphylococcus aureus in 50%, Staphylococcus epidermidis in 29%, and gram-negative rods in 14% of patients.
