Abstract
Lightning discharges are breakdown electric currents starting in regions where the electric field locally exceeds about 400 kV/m. Most lightning events occur in connection with thunderclouds. Lightning has been observed, however, during volcano eruptions and in dust storms. In this chapter, we outline the normal phenomenon of lightning. Ball and bead lightning are rare events and not well documented. We will not discuss these exotic forms of lightning. The reader is referred to Barry (1980).
