Abstract
During the last decade, a spectrum of new technical developments has provided the field of intensive care medicine with better means of monitoring. Some of these tools, such as the Swan-Ganz pulmonary artery catheter, not only contributed to an improved and preciser diagnostic and therapeutic management of the critically ill patient, but also added by the invasive nature complications such as nosocomial infection, thrombosis and bleeding. Other techniques use non-invasive methods to assess cardiovascular and respiratory function, avoiding the side effects cited.
