Abstract
A strong connection between technical and economic aspects is characteristic for present-day shipping. In this paper Simulation is identified as a powerfull tool for preparing decisions within the field of shipping because by its means the user is able of experimenting with such complex models necessary for representing technical and economic conditions of ship Operation. There is a need for quantifying the economic influence of the amount of borrowed capital and its costs for building a ship on the one hand and of the extent of the ship’s utilization and obtainable freight rates during ship operation on the other hand. Technical conditions influence the transportation costs because these are essentially determined by resistance, propulsion and fuel consumption. An example shows the use of a discrete and deterministic Simulation model for estimating the revenues of a combined container-bulk vessel.
