Abstract
A first insight into mechanistic aspects of the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide may be obtained by studying the coadsorption of CO and H2 under non-catalytic conditions, in particular at low pressure. Only the very first stages of the hydrogenation process(es) are amenable to observation under these conditions, since thermodynamics favor only one-carbon species at low pressure.
