Abstract
Serious obstructive coronary atherosclerosis need not be associated with angina pectoris; long recognized at the autopsy table, this fact has been known to coronary angiographers for some 17 years [1,2] and its functional consequences for almost as long [3]. Evolving clinical awareness of this apparent paradox is illustrated in the titles of two editorials by the same author, Cohn: Severe Asymptomatic Coronary Artery Disease in 1977 [4] and Silent Myocardial Ischemia in Patients with a Defective Anginal Warning System in 1980 [5], A recent seminar on asymptomatic coronary artery disease [6] attests to the widespread serious interest in this topic, as does the symposium of which this presentation forms a part.
