Zusammenfassung
Anhaltspunkte für Störungen des Serotoninstoffwechsels bei Depressionen ergeben sich aus Post-mortem-Studien [7, 13] sowie einer erniedrigten Konzentration von 5-Hydroxyindolessigsäure, dem Hauptabbauprodukt des Serotonins, im Liquor depressiver Patienten [1, 3, 9]. Auch Befunde über eine Erniedrigung der Vorstufe des Serotonins, L-Tryptophan, im Serum Depressiver sprechen hierfür, jedoch sind die Ergebnisse in der Literatur hierüber widersprüchlich [4, 11, 12]. Tryptophan liegt im Serum sowohl in gebundener als auch in freier Form vor, wobei allein die freie Form die Blut-Hirn-Schranke überqueren kann. Vermehrte Aufmerksamkeit wurde in letzter Zeit auf die sog. kompetitiven Aminosäuren gerichtet, die mit Tryptophan um den Transport über die Blut-Hirn-Schranke konkurrieren und deren Ansteigen einem relativen Tryptophanmangel gleichkommt [10].
