Abstract
Travel by sea has undergone considerable change over the past 20 years as a result of the ready availability of cheap, rapid air travel. With the decrease in the number of passengers using sea travel as a mode of transportation, the great passenger fleets of the past have disappeared to be replaced by purpose-built liners engaged in the holiday cruise business. Normally, the cruises are of 1–2 weeks’ duration and are operated in areas where the climate is attractive and the seas calm. Nevertheless, a few passenger ships continue to operate popular world cruises of up to 3 months’ duration. These can present their own particular problems as by their very nature they tend to attract an older clientele, often with preexisting medical conditions.
