Abstract

In the long run, prevention of disease is more effective than the best therapy. But preventive measures must be carried out at a time when there is no apparent danger to health. Disinfection, disinfestation and deratting (DDD) are unpopular measures, but by deratting, the plague has been restricted to small areas of the globe; in addition, yellow fever and malaria have been eradicated in those areas where the transmitting insects have been killed, and disinfection has been an invaluable weapon against cholera and salmonellosis.
