Paired Tread Wheels as a Tool for the Analysis of Orientation Behaviour in Arthropods

Abstract

Most investigations of directional orientation in animals start with a quantitative description of the movements of the animal as a whole. Any further analysis of the underlying system requires measurements of additional variables within the system that are relevant for the orientation process, such as movements of individual legs or groups of legs or neuronal activity. Following an idea of Franceschini, we developed paired tread wheels which allow measurements of such variables in walking arthropods.
