Abstract

Natural language interfaces to database systems are moving from the research labs into the market. New questions about the usefulness of such systems in daily practice become relevant. This paper investigates some goals and development trends from the point of view of the user, and presents criteria and methods for evaluating natural language query languages using the example of a series of experiments conducted at the Center for Research on Infprmation Systems of New York University. Finally, some problems of application development are briefly addressed.
