Abstract
The expanding balloon catheter was first presented by our group in 1977 [1–4] and has been commercially available for 6 months (Surgimed, Copenhagen). The major differences between this new catheter and that ones used so far are the following:

The fluid contained in the balloon is subjected to considerably higher pressure (8–12 atm); accordingly, the balloon is harder.

2.
Once the balloon is filled an increase in pressure will not lead to a change in size or shape because it is not elastic in the direction of the diameter.

3.
The balloon has only a longitudinal elasticity. When the catheter is introduced into the vessel the dilatation segment has the same transverse diameter as the tube. Folding — a major problem with other catheters — can thus be prevented (Figs. 1–3).
