Abstract

Like most impulses for a rescue service, the origin of air rescue can be found in the military field. Air transport of wounded soldiers developed especially during World War II. The use of helicopters for rescue missions was started by the Americans in Korea in 1952, and reached its peak during the Vietnam war.
