Abstract
Because of increasing industrialization and motorization the number of people seriously injured or even killed in accidents is rising considerably. In West Germany, for example, about half a million people are injured in accidents every year, and more than 10 000 of them die as a result of their injuries. At a certain point we had to accept the fact that we were unable to change the situation by treatment in hospitals. Then we realized that in order to improve the chance of survival for traumatized patients quick and qualified medical aid was the most necessary element. Reduction of the therapy-free interval was very important, and that led to one of the main ideas of our emergency medical care system in West Germany: In a case of emergency the doctor has to get to the patient as quickly as possible — not vice versa.
