Abstract

In mass disasters caused either by natural events (earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions) or by accidents (fires, explosions, wars, plane crashes) the purpose of the intervention of the medicolegal team is primarily to identify the victims. This is a major problem both from a socioethical and from a legal point of view; in fact, it is only upon the identification by relatives or friends (which is often incorrect when made before identification by the forensic team) that the death certificate may be issued.
