Abstract

As the world’s population continues to grow, the number of casualties from natural and man-made disasters, excluding war, continues to increase. An 11-year summary of international disaster assistance (1965—1975) indicates the magnitude of disaster needs. During that period, there were 452 disasters (almost one a week) requiring aid from international agencies. More than 3.5 million people were killed, 453 million people were seriously affected, property damage exceeded U.S. $ 13 billion, and total world assistance was valued at $ 3.4 million [1].
