Abstract

The complex course which characterizes the development of medical thought is, above all, a manifestation of the individual and collective diversity of human beings and the diseases which afflict them. The history of ocular therapeutics is no exception. The use of medical therapeutics in the treatment of eye diseases is as old as medicine itself, and its history is an interesting one, documented well into antiquity and generously supplied with engaging personalities and dramatic events. In its study one quickly uncovers an innate charm due largely to the spiritual kinship between the modern physician and his professional forebears. The more this kinship is reinforced, the more solid will be the foundations of modern medical thought and the more productive its continued development.
