Some years ago it had been proposed that the excitation of self-sustained oscillations (limit cycles) should be important for certain biological processes (1). Both, an increasing number of frequency specific effects in irradiated biological systems and some model calculations seem to support the limit cycle concept (2–5 and the contributions of Fröhlich, Grundler and Drissler in this volume). The present article is a brief review of simple models and deals with new aspects of the external drive of limit cycles.
