Abstract

The lobus caudalis of the cerebellum in gymnotid fish receives a weak but direct input from both the posterior and the anterior lateral line nerves, which subserve electroreception and ordinary lateral line reception, respectively (Maler et al. 1974). Although physiological studies have been made of electroreceptive and multimodal units in the cerebellum (Bastian 1974, 1975, 1976; Behrend 1977), it is not clear to what parts of the brain the lobus caudalis projects. The present report was prompted by the discovery of a well-defined projection to the torus, which has been reported upon in a preliminary fashion (Scheich and Ebbesson 1981).
