Correspondence between Geographic Proximity and Phenetic Similarity among Pinus Brutia Ten. Populations in Southern Turkey
Pinus brutia Ten. is distributed mainly in the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean regions, from sea level up to 1400 m., and rarely in the Black sea coast from 0 up to 500 m., growing under diverse ecological conditions (Critchfield and Little 1966). The species exhibits considerable variation both in form and growth characteristics in its range, suggesting that at least some portion of such variation is under genetic control. Understanding of geographic variation patterns of a tree species is of vital importance in afforestation and reforestation programs, since unknown seed sources often results in great economic losses due to lack of adaptations to a given region (Callaham 1964). Among other things, degrees of within and between population variations, and distances of seed transfer zones for a given population both vertically and horizontally in a given space must primarily be determined for selection and breeding processes.
