Abstract
A quick method for making multistate characters out of continuous measurements is described. Following the intuitive method used by taxonomists, which is a kind of discriminant function analysis, we looked for gaps and dips in the frequency curve.
Often in Botany we have the plants pre-assigned to groups, such as populations or species which we wish to classify. For each pre-assigned group, whatever the size, we try to calculate the range, the mean and the standard deviation. These values are represented in a bar diagram. The bar diagrams are then superimposed either on a form of a rough frequency curve or ordered by their means. The position of the bars is used to establish the character-states into which the scale is divided.
