Summary
The La Balma-M. Capio ultramafic-mafic body, in the Ivrea-Verbano complex (Western Alps, Italy) is a sill-shaped layered intrusion, concordantly emplaced into high-grade metamorphic sediments (Kinzigitic Series). It mainly consists of a thick layer of amphibole-peridotite overlain by thinner pyroxenite and amphibole-gabbro.
Fe-Ni-Cu sulfides (mainly pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite) occur dispersed throughout the rocks of the intrusion. Moreover they concentrate at two well-defined levels, one close to the base, and the other inside the peridotitic section of the intrusion.
The hypothesis is put forward that the intrusion derived from the in situ differentiation of a hydrous, high-Mg magma, probably being sulfur-saturated.
The occurrence of high-Mg and sulfur-saturated magmas, in the Ivrea-Verbano complex, suggests that a multi-stage mechanism is reliable as an intrusion model of the whole complex.
