Zusammenfassung
Der Begriff Chemonukleolyse wurde 1964 von Smith für eine neue Behandlungsmethode des lumbalen Bandscheibenvorfalls geprägt, die darin besteht, das Enzym Chymopapain direkt in das Zentrum einer erkrankten Bandscheibe einzuspritzen. Das 1941 von Jansen und Balls aus der tropischen Papaya-Frucht isolierte Enzym spaltet die Eiweißmukopolysaccharidkomplexe des Nucleus pulposus durch Hydrolyse. Dies führt zu einer raschen Abnahme der Wasserbindungsfähigkeit und somit zur Reduktion von Volumen und Druck in der Bandscheibe und damit zur Entlastung der zuvor komprimierten Nervenwurzel. Die zerlegten Polysaccharidketten werden resorbiert und über die Niere ausgeschieden. Nach der Resorption kommt es zum „Kollaps“ der Bandscheibe.
