Abstract
At the beginning of the late Eocene, in Auversian or early Bartonian times, a marine transgression flooded the Paris Basin from the west. It formed a gulf which reached as far as Champagne to the east and which was separated from the Belgian basin by the Artois ridge. This sea was surrounded by a complex of lakes and lagoons (Fig. 124).
