Four-Photon Resonant Parametric Interactions (RPI)

Abstract

This chapter is devoted to four-photon resonant parametric processes which are now more and more widely used in IR and visible and UV frequency ranges to produce coherent radiation, including such with tunable frequency. Much attention is paid to explaining the role of the generated wave phase locking and confinement, of parametric self-induced transparency and of the saturation of resonant transition populations. Based on the developed theory and on especially designed experiments, the problem of the SRS anti-Stokes component generation mechanism is clarified. The nature of the dynamics of biharmonic pumping SRS that is used in the frequency conversion of weak (sub-threshold) radiation is illuminated. The process of frequency increase and decrease under two-photon absorption of the pumping radiation are also discussed. In the last section the possibility for the use of four-photon parametric processes for soft excitation of a two-photon laser is discussed.
