Distributed Systems: Examples and Definition

  • Gregor von Bochmann

What is a distributed system ? — Most data processing systems are of a distributed nature, and most computer systems can be considered as being distributed under certain aspects. This chapter presents some common examples of data processing and computing systems and discusses in particular the aspects of parallelism and distribution of control and data. Some classification schemes are explained, and a definition of “distributed systems” is attempted.
