Abstract
The North Sea is a reservoir of high productivity and rich ichthyofauna which may be useful in the studies of regularities of reproduction of many fish species. The haddock was selected for these studies because of the important role it plays in commercial fisheries. In the early 1970’s the haddock ranked second to herring in the total catch of North Sea fishes. Sharp fluctuations of haddock abundance by year can be related to differing strength of recruiting year classes, the latter being dependent on reproduction conditions which are subject to considerable year-to-year variation.
