Abstract
The function of a multicellular organism depends on the exchange of information between cells in distant parts of the body. The endocrine system is one of the systems for intercellular communication. Steroid hormones, for example, are produced in specialized gland cells, distributed in the bloodstream and are finally able to regulate the differentiation and function of whole organs.
