Regulation of Development of Salivary Glands in 3rd Instar Drosophila melanogaster Larvae by Ecdysone

  • Conference paper
Biochemistry of Differentiation and Morphogenesis

Abstract

There is ample evidence that growth and development in Drosophila melanogaster is controlled and coordinated by hormones. Molting of larvae, puparium formation, pupal and adult development are triggered and regulated by steroid hormones, the ecdysteroids, and by sesquiterpenoids, the juvenile hormones [13. In this paper we will not discuss the importance of juvenile hormones for ecdysteroid action during molting processes. Instead, we will concentrate on that developmental stage of Drosophila melanogaster, where 3rd instar larvae develop into prepupae, i.e. the beginning of metamorphosis. It is very fortunate that salivary glands of 3rd instar larvae possess polytene interphase chromosomes, which are so gigantic that they can be analyzed under a phase contrast microscope [2].
