The Position of Laparoscopy Among Methods Used in Differential Diagnosis of Chronic Liver Diseases

Abstract

It is the great merit of Kalk that, by means of systematic laparoscopic examinations registering the macroscopic and bioptic-histological morphology of chronic hepatitis, he clarified the morphogenesis of cirrhosis of the liver and defined the connecting link between acute viral hepatitis and hepatic cirrhosis (Kalk 1942, 1947, 1948; Kalk etal. 1943). Under the impression of Kalk’s results, the indication for laparoscopy in Germany was concentrated on liver diagnostics (Kühn 1949; Beyreder and Rieder 1958; Brühl 1960, 1963; Heinkel and Landgraf 1962; Lindner 1968,1974,1976; Vido and Wildhirt 1969; Beck and Dischler 1971; Henning et al. 1971 a, b, 1972; Meyer-Burg 1973; Knoblauch and Lämmli 1974; Look and Lüders 1975; Petzold and Rogos 1975).
