Abstract
The successful management of relations and exchanges with the external world is one of the primary tasks of the species and the individual as well in the struggle for survival. The thinking behind Darwin’s theory of the origin of species and also of their extinction — the “survival of the fittest” — can nowadays be traced even into the realms of cell physiology and pathophysiology. The dynamics of an organisms’s relationship with the external world are governed by the unceasing changes in the environment and by the genetically preordained defence mechanisms and adaptive powers of species and individuals. Spontaneous mutation provides a mechanism which prevents life from getting stuck in a rut and gives each generation a chance of competing successfully in the struggle.
