Abstract

Embolizations within the external carotid territory have been carried out since more than 10 years ago. The indications for this therapy depend on the type of lesion and are discussed here in the light of over 100 embolizations performed mainly in the Department of Neuroradiology of the University of Tübingen [4, 6]. In all cases, superselective catheterization was performed and Gelfoam or lyophilized dura was used as embolization material. There were three complications: one case of facial local skin necrosis, which could be excised, and two of incomplete restitution of neurological deficits. One of these two patients eventually died. Otherwise, embolization was tolerated well.
