Abstract
In 1884, Louis Durhing detailed the clinical features of dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) [4]. Although the etiology is still unknown, considerable knowledge about DH has been attained over the past 15 years. Stimulated by the discoveries of Cormane [3] and Van der Meer [45] that IgA is deposited in the skin of these patients, and the discovery of Marks et al. [25] that there is an associated gastrointestinal abnormality, intense investigation has been undertaken to determine the roles of the immune system and the gastrointestinal lesion in the pathogenesis of DH. In this review we will describe these findings and other more recent advances and draw from them conclusions as to possible pathophysiologic mechanisms which may be involved in DH.
