Introduction: Chemistry of the Troposphere — Some Problems and Their Temporal Frameworks
Attention of scientists from many scientific disciplines has been focusing more and more sharply on the chemistry of the lower atmosphere. The lower atmosphere is in contact with plants and animals, with forests, crops, and soils, with the ocean and its biota, as well as with the stratosphere above Major environmental problems, such as carbon dioxide increase, acidic rain, smog, and radioactive gases and particles, involve the troposphere. Understanding these problems, as well as the broader one of the evolution of atmospheric composition through geologic time, requires knowledge of the time scales at which materials circulate through the troposphere into and out of the lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and stratosphere, as well as detailed understanding of the complex chemical reactions involving these materials.
