Use of Prostacyclin to Prevent Postoperative Psychic and Neurological Disturbances After Open-Heart Surgery: A Clinical Study

Psychopathological and Neurological Dysfunctions Following Open-Heart Surgery

Abstract

Postoperative psychiatric disturbances still occur very often after open-heart operations, and the reason for them is generally thought to lie in the extracorporeal circulation (ECC). The aggregation of thrombocytes is assumed to be one of the traumata induced by ECC, mostly brought about by contact with the large surfaces within the heart-lung machine, by mechanical alterations due to suction with the coronary suction lines, and by the blood coming in contact with collagen in the pericardium.
