Abstract
The discovery of chemotherapeutic agents was a great moment in the long history of medicine. Yet we are now faced with the problems of drug resistance in bacteria only 50 years after the real start of chemotherapy. The presence of resistance (R) factors and their worldwide spread have caused many problems in medicine, stock farming, and the fish breeding industry. In addition, the prevalence of R factors has broadened our perspective on the role that genetic exchange plays in the natural history of bacterial species.
