Membrane Phosphorylation: Chemiosmotic Concept and Other Hypotheses

Abstract

In this chapter we shall first consider and, as far as possible, formulate precisely the theoretical approaches to the mechanism of membrane phosphorylation proposed during the last 30 years. Special attention will be given to Mitchell’s chemiosmotic concept, the citation rating of which is, probably, the highest in the history of natural sciences. We shall then analyze the physical meaning of certain notions used in various concepts of membrane phosphorylation. In the last part of this chapter the experimental data pro and contra the chemiosmotic concept will be summed up and analyzed. I shall not deal here with the relaxation concept since it will be discussed in Chap.5.
