Abstract

This study is a double “blind” prospective evaluation of the efficacy of dextran 40 (Rheomakrodex, Fa. Knoll, Ludwigshafen) in the treatment of acute pancreatitis. Sixty-five patients with acute pancreatitis were randomly divided into dextran and nondextran treatment groups. The two groups were comparable at the outset of the study and except for dextran 40 received identical therapy. These data indicate that prophylactic use of low molecular weight dextran in the treatment of acute pancreatitis can influence the course and the outcome of type I and type II pancreatitis. Hemorrhagic necrotizing pancreatitis without viable pancreatic tissue, however, cannot be influenced by dextran 40.
