Abstract

In 1959 Pollock suggested that it was difficult to prognosticate in the individual patient with acute pancreatitis (12) and this view was echoed by Trapnell 7 years later (15). In a more recent report on 116 autopsies of patients who had died from acute pancreatitis, it was also concluded that the severity of the attack had been underestimated in several patients (14). Widespread awareness of the unreliability of routine clinical evaluation of a patient with acute pancreatitis has led to the search for alternative techniques of prognosis.
