Abstract

As early as 1918, Blair described the transfer of live bone on a pedicle: here, either muscle or skin may be used as feeding pedicle. Strauch et al. (1971) isolated a rib using the vessel pedicle of the internal mammary artery and used it to reconstruct the lower jaw in a dog. McCulloch and Fredrickson (1973) divided this vessel pedicle and re-anastomosed the vessels using microvascular surgical techniques.
