Abstract
Precise preparation and planning of the operation is crucial and often determines a successful outcome. Examination and general investigation may show up absolute contraindications for tissue transplantation: e.g. angiopathies, areas of occlusion in the vessels of the legs, and other conditions which contraindicate a long anaesthetic, etc. In some cases, it is possible to localise the arteries in both the recipient and donor areas simply by palpation, and frequently superficial veins can also be seen. In many cases, however, this is not possible and the state of the vessels is unclear. This is particularly true in cases where there have been preceding operations or where there has been additional injury in the donor or recipient areas. In such situations a Doppler investigation can be useful, particularly in the extremities and in the head and neck area.
