External Fixation of the Upper Extremity with the ASIF Tubular Set and Wagner Apparatus

In the upper extremity, external fixation is indicated only in certain clinically problematic high risk cases. Because of the topographic anatomy and functional considerations we recommend a clasp or half-pin assembly. According to our classification, this is Type I external fixation (Hierholzer, 1978). The Type I assembly can be realized using either the ASIF-set (Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) or the Wagner apparatus (Wagner, 1972). The technical principle of the Type I assembly was described previously (Hierholzer, 1975; 1978; Wagner, 1972).
