Abstract

Immediately after its publication the Kiel classification of non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) [10,15] attracted the interest not only of pathologists but also of clinicians. In order to analyze its clinical applicability and prognostic value which are considered to be the most crucial points for the practical use of a new histopathologic system, in West Germany and Austria several internists and radiotherapists formed a cooperative multi-center study group. This so-called Kiel Lymphoma Study Group first started a retrospective investigation evaluating data from 405 patients [4, 5, 23]. Encouraging results of this analysis led the same group in 1975 to initiate a more detailed prospective study [3]. After a period of 5 years, in October 1980 when registration of new patients was closed, more than 1000 patients from 20 hospitals had entered the study.
