Zusammenfassung

Die Entwicklung der Herzchirurgie — besonders die Einführung der extrakorporalen Zirkulation (ECC) mit Hilfe der Herz-Lungen-Maschine — ist beispielhaft für die Entwicklung neuer medizinischer Technologie: Einerseits wurde ein enormer Fortschritt in der Behandlung von Krankheiten erzielt, die früher als unheilbar galten, andererseits entstanden eine Reihe von Folgeproblemen, gerade auch psychologischer Art. Wenn diese auch in der längerfristigen individuellen Prognose als weniger gravierend erscheinen mögen als die Nichtbehandlung eines Herzvitiums, können sie doch keineswegs einfach als “quantité negligeable”, also als unvermeidliche,aber “nicht gravierende” Nebenerscheinung in Kauf genommen werden.
