Abstract
The ore deposits of the Kawayama mine are of pyrometasomatic and partly vein-type origin, genetically closely related with acidic magmatism of Late Cretaceous age. The stages of hypogene mineralization in the upper ore deposit are divided into four major stages called I, II, III, and IV from earliest to latest. Major constituent ore minerals are pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. The relationship between the polymorphic variations of pyrrhotite and the kinds of the associated characteristic gangue mineral as related to hypogene mineralization has been demonstrated. Pyrrhotites associated with hedenbergite of stage I and actinolite of stage II are completely or predominantly of the sulphur-poor hexagonal phase. Pyrrhotite associated with chlorite of stage III is predominantly of the monoclinic phase. In the stage IV a single phase of monoclinic pyrrhotite associated with hisingerite-vein mineralization is exclusively present as an alteration product from the hexagonal pyrrhotites of stages I, II, and III.
