Spondylitis - A Complication Following Lumbar Disc Operations

Part of the Advances in Neurosurgery book series (NEURO, volume 10)

From 1962 till 1977 a total of 1289 lumbar disc operations were performed at the Neurochirurgische Universitätsklinik Erlangen. In 9 of these patients spondylitis was found to occur, so that an incidence of 0.7% may be calculated. In comparison to the data in the literature where the incidence ranges from 0.2% – 4.0%, this incidence of 0.7% is quite low. Particularly interesting is the fact that spondylitis did not occur in the first 9 years of this 15-year-period, this complication has been diagnosed repeatedly since 1972.
