Mannoproteins: Structure

  • Chapter

Part of the Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology book series (921,volume 13 / B)

Abstract

The bulk of this chapter will be concerned with mannoproteins of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. For this review, mannoproteins are defined as glycoproteins that contain 15 to 90% mannose by weight. Although this volume emphasizes extracellular carbohydrates, the discussion will include the cell wall and periplasmic mannoproteins and, for comparison, intracellular glycoproteins found in the yeast vacuole. Other reviews of mannoprotein structure have appeared (Ballou 1974, 1976, Farkaš 1979, Phaff 1971, Spencer and Gorin 1973), and this article will aim at summarizing the central facts and describing some newer developments.
