Mesterolone: a New Androgen for the Treatment of Male Infertility

  • Chapter
Treatment of Male Infertility

Abstract

Hormonal treatment of male infertility has mainly involved the use of androgens and gonadotropins for disturbances in spermatogenesis. Mesterolone (17β-hydroxy 1α-methyl-5α-androstan-3-one) is a new androgen for the treatment of male infertility. Up to the present, only the C17-alkylated testosterone- and androstene-diol-derivatives have been used for oral androgen treatment. These steroids, given in higher doses and for longer periods, all have an inhibitory effect on gonadotropin secretion by the hypophysis and on testicular function. Mesterolone does not possess the central blocking effect of testosterone even at high doses.
